Beyond the tap

Simple habits that lower exposure, reviewed by our Scientific Advisory Board.

In your water, right nowFree habits that lower lead, copper and other heavy metals today.
A glass of tap water
1 Flush before you drinkRun the cold tap 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has sat for more than 6 hours. Both lead and copper concentrate in water that has been standing in your pipes, so the first draw is the worst.
2 Cold water only for drinking, cooking, and formula.Hot water pulls more lead and copper from pipes and fixtures. Start with cold and heat it on the stove if needed.
3 Clean your faucet aerator.Metal particles collect in the screen at the tip of the faucet. Unscrew and rinse it every few months.

1 Paint in pre-1978 homesOlder paint is the most common non-water lead source. Keep painted surfaces intact, and use lead-safe practices for any renovation.
2 Imported or antique ceramics and crystalSome glazed pottery, leaded crystal, and imported dishware can leach lead into food and drink. Avoid using them for daily acidic foods or beverages.
3 Imported spices, cosmetics, and remediesCertain imported turmeric, sindoor, kohl, and traditional remedies have tested high for lead. Buy from sources that test for it.

In your dietNutrients that reduce how much lead the body absorbs.
A balanced meal
1 CalciumAdequate calcium (dairy, leafy greens, fortified foods) competes with lead for absorption in the gut. Steady daily intake matters more than any single serving.
2 IronIron-rich foods (beans, lean meats, fortified cereals) lower lead uptake, and iron deficiency increases it. This matters most for children and during pregnancy.
3 Vitamin CVitamin C supports iron absorption and is associated with lower blood lead. Pair it with iron-rich meals.
4 Regular mealsLead is absorbed more on an empty stomach. Consistent meals and snacks reduce uptake, especially in young children.
